Winter Is Coming

The coldest day of winter varies across regions of the Unites States. The Western U.S. generally experiences the coldest day of winter weeks before the Eastern U.S. experiences its coldest day. Using the North America Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS), I estimated winter's coldest day and corresponding temperature for every county in the contigious U.S by bootstrapping 32 years of daily climatological data from each U.S. county. Further details about this analysis and the visualization below are available in a companion blog post.

Click on the radio buttons to view the chloropleth map by either the estimated coldest day or coldest temperature. Hover with the mouse over any county to reveal county-level metadata and an inset time series plot of the estimated minimum temperatures (blue line) and 95% confidence interval (surrounding gray area) of winter.
